Why This Fails Locally
Extension-spring systems from the 1960s don't fail gracefully. A torsion spring lets go and the door usually sits put, held by the opposite spring and the cable drum. What the Fix Involves
We measure the opening on site rather than order off the old door's stated size, since original 1960s rough openings vary more than modern ones. If the garage has low headroom, we spec a low-headroom torsion kit instead of trying to force a standard bar over a shallow header. New jamb brackets go in where the old wood has loosened, and we replace the full spring and cable system rather than reuse the extension springs, regardless of what the new door weighs. One limitation worth saying plainly: on some 1960s framing we find rot or undersized headers that need a carpenter's attention before a new door goes in safely, and that's outside what we do - we'll tell you straight if that's the case rather than hang a door on a header that can't take it.
