What Can Go Wrong

A door that slams down hard and fast instead of drifting shut is a spring that's lost tension gradually rather than snapped outright, which is common on those original 1980-era extension setups that were never rated for the door's weight in the first place. A door hanging crooked on one side, or a loud bang followed by the door refusing to open, points to a snapped cable or a bracket that's finally given way after years of surface rust. If the door jerks and stutters partway up, check the track for a bent section or a roller that's worn through - on houses this age, the rollers are often original and long overdue.
What the Fix Involves
